Dr. Stefano V. Albrecht

I am Associate Professor in the College of Computing and Data Science at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, where I lead the Autonomous Agents Research Group. My research interests span autonomous agents, multi-agent interaction, reinforcement learning, and game theory, with a focus on sequential decision making under uncertainty. The long-term goal of my research is to create intelligent autonomous agents capable of robust interaction with other agents to accomplish tasks in complex environments. I have previously received fellowships from the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and German Academic Scholarship Foundation.

About NTU: Young and research-intensive, NTU was ranked 1st in AI by Shanghai Global Ranking 2025, 2nd in AI by U.S. News & World Report 2025, and 4th in AI by QS World Rankings 2026.

Becoming an AI Researcher: Practical Advice for Graduate Students Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning: Foundations and Modern Approaches

Our textbook Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning: Foundations and Modern Approaches (MIT Press, 2024) has become the standard reference of the field and is freely available online. Lecture recordings from a summer school based on the book are available online.

New PhD students and those interested in pursuing a PhD may be interested in my upcoming book Becoming an AI Researcher: Practical Advice for Graduate Students (Cambridge University Press, 2026). Sign up to the book's substack to receive updates about the book.

Prospective Students

If you are a student looking for research topics in autonomous agents and multi-agent systems, see our surveys on Multi-Agent Robot Foundation Models, Human-AI Teamwork Orchestration, Ad Hoc Teamwork, and Agents Modelling Other Agents. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss research ideas. I am more likely to reply if your message includes concrete ideas for research projects.
